KAN YOU SEE?
The lynching of Jesse Washington.
Washington was beaten with shovels and bricks, was castrated, and his ears were cut off. A tree supported the iron chain that lifted him above the fire. Jesse attempted to climb up the skillet hot chain. For this, the men cut off his fingers.
Jesse was 15.
This is only one of the many images I see when I think of racism.
White followers and white people in general: Take a long hard look at this picture. Take a long hard look at the spectators to this abhorrent crime. The people who were behind the gruesome death of this 15 year old boy.
This is why Black people cannot just ‘get over it’.
This is why we are ‘whining’ and ‘complaining’ so much.
This is why you, white people, cannot say the word, nigger.
Stephen Bantu Biko (18 December 1946 – 12 September 1977)
Today would’ve been Biko’s 66th birthday had he not been murdered by the Apartheid police in South Africa from injuries he sustained after being tortured whilst in custody in Pretoria.
“Black Consciousness is in essence the realization by the black man of the need to rally together with his brothers around the cause of their oppression.” - Steve Biko
